Becoming Pro Choice?

Post  Speck on Sat Jan 31, 2009 7:47 am

Hello Smile

My name is speck Smile

I had a few PM's with CM recently, and she had asked me why and how I went from Pro Life to Pro Choice.

I have been chewing on my answer for the last few days, as I find it really hard to answer, especially because I know, even in my own eyes, certain things sound hypocritical, but in my heart feel right to me (at least at this time in my growing).

However, I will try as best as I can to explain that switch.

The main foundation of my switch has to do with Free Will and Choice. They are one in the same to me.

Spiritually, we are (imo) given free will to make choices in our day to day lives, and our choices, for good or bad, can have the power to bring us closer or farther away from Christ.

Choice, in many and all aspects, not just abortion, is one of the many reasons for free will, and what I see to be this level our our "training" or "School" for the next level.

It is up to the individual to graduate and be ready for that next level only by making choices, positive or negative.

Now, I have had people ask me, "should we then make Murder legal?"

Yet, when we can deduce the it is self defence, it is legally and morally ok.

I see making abortion illegal, harmful to those (albeit extremely few) women who would morally be justified even is Gods eyes, to have an abortion, and it be in self defence. This is not just physical life of the mother, this is also regarding emotional and mental life of the mother.

Though these instances are extremely in the minority, I can not justify in my heart, forcing pregnancy on a woman if it would truly have been self defence. And to make abortion Illegal, these minorities would suffer.

As for those who *I* would personally not see as self defence, I leave their choices in the hands of God.

I have sinned and continue to sin in many ways of my life, and I cannot fight for abortion to become illegal if I do not stand on that same day and fight for lying to be illegal, as both sins are no greater or lesser value in the eyes of God.

I try to help women to see that there are other choices, that do not lead to the childs life to end. You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink. I can and do only what is within my power to help show the truth and change minds, but after that, I feel it is in Gods, hands, and between that individual and God. At that point, I can only ask and pray, that the person, will work on their own personal relationship with Christ.

So I guess that sums it about up CM Smile (I hope my rambling made some sort of sence Very Happy )

And TY for the invite to the forum LC! Razz

Thank you for your post. Sorry for the length of this; I'm feeling rather verbose today!

There's really not a lot of difference between pro-life and pro-choice at the core of things. The only real difference is that pro-life believes the child has a right to life equal to the woman's right to control her own body, whereas pro-choice does not. There is a lot of arguing to defend both stances and there is a lot of logic - and emotion - behind this.

I believe that making elective abortion illegal would always have to contain within it exception clauses specifically for women who have legitimate reasons. You said it yourself: murder in general is illegal, but in some cases it's justifiable. I believe there are justifiable reasons to abort as well, and that each woman who wants an abortion should be evaluated on an individual basis just like people are in court. Obviously it should involve doctors and psychologists, friends, family, the woman, etc instead of a judge and jury.

Yes, we have free will... but just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. Many laws violate our "right" to free will, but it is only to protect others. Living in a civilized nation means we have to sacrifice some "freedoms" for the overall safety and enjoyment of all people. So while I don't have the right to punch people in the face whenever I feel like it, I'm also glad they don't have that right either!

The minority of women who would have to undergo review for abortion if it were illegal would be given every right to the fair judgment of their doctors and psychologists. I'd prefer to keep lawyers out of this because I hate lawyers. Even if you do kill someone in self defense, you still have to undergo review; your word is not good enough. I like how someone said it on PLA: "You don't make laws FOR the exceptions, you make laws AROUND the exceptions". Just because some women can be excluded from illegal abortion laws doesn't mean they should all remain legal, just like the case for self defense. Self defense is justifiable when you can say you thought and/or knew you were going to die if you didn't kill the other person. Well, there are cases for abortion where a woman will die or will most likely die if she does not abort.

That's also why I don't feel illegal abortion should be punished like murder: because these women truly believe they are defending their rights.

In general, abortion is not needed and is simply a cruel, inhumane practice. There will always be exceptions, so we cannot let those get in the way of preventing a general crime. What if people had argued about the exceptions for murder? "We can't make murder illegal, because the few people who have a justified need for self defense would be hurt by it"? We would all be in grave danger! You can build a law around the exceptions so it is safe and fair for everyone.

That's what I feel, anyway. And I consider myself pro-life. I think you have good ideas that could be considered both pro-life and pro-choice. Many of us fall into this middle ground. Convince women to CHOSE life. Help prevent the pregnancy in the first place.
